Understanding Geographic Coordinate Formats
Different GPS systems, surveying instruments, and mapping platforms format geographic coordinates differently. Our converter allows you to input coordinates in whichever format you have, providing instant conversions into the other two common global standards.
Conversion Formulas
DD to DMS:
Minutes = (DD - Degrees) × 60
Seconds = (Minutes - Floor(Minutes)) × 60
Minutes = (DD - Degrees) × 60
Seconds = (Minutes - Floor(Minutes)) × 60
DMS to DD:
DD = Degrees + (Minutes / 60) + (Seconds / 3600)
(Multiply by -1 if South or West)
DD = Degrees + (Minutes / 60) + (Seconds / 3600)
(Multiply by -1 if South or West)
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between DD and DMS?▼
Decimal Degrees (DD) expresses coordinates as single positive or negative numbers (e.g., 30.2672°). Degrees Minutes Seconds (DMS) breaks degrees down into 60 minutes and 3600 seconds with hemisphere direction indicators (e.g., 30° 16' 1.92" N).
How are negative degrees represented in DMS?▼
In Decimal Degrees, Southern latitudes and Western longitudes are represented with negative values (-). In DMS, the minus sign is replaced by cardinal letters: S for South and W for West.
What is DDM (Degrees Decimal Minutes)?▼
DDM is the standard format used in nautical navigation and marine GPS systems. It keeps degrees as integers and formats remaining fractional degrees as decimal minutes (e.g., 30° 16.032' N).
