How to Use CSV to Map

Our interactive CSV to Map tool allows you to instantly plot coordinate-bearing CSV datasets onto an interactive map without needing desktop GIS software.

Upload a CSV File

Upload any standard .csv file containing latitude and longitude columns by dragging and dropping it into the upload zone or clicking "Choose File". You can also click "Load Sample CSV" to test the tool with demonstration data.

Confirm Column Mapping

The tool automatically identifies likely coordinate columns (such as lat, latitude, lng, lon, x, y) and optional label columns. You can manually adjust the mappings to match your dataset.

View and Inspect Points

Once mapped, points appear on the map and the view automatically fits their bounds. Click any marker or browse the feature list to inspect all row attributes in the properties inspector.

Export to GeoJSON or KML

Export valid points directly into standard GeoJSON or Google Earth KML files. Source properties and custom columns are preserved in the exported files.

Adding Custom Columns (Population, Category, Notes, etc.)

You can include any number of custom attributes in your CSV file. The tool only requires two columns for geographic coordinates (Latitude and Longitude); every other column is automatically detected and stored as a feature property.

name,latitude,longitude,population,category,notes
Tokyo,35.6762,139.6503,37400068,Metropolis,"Greater Tokyo Area"
Delhi,28.7041,77.1025,32941308,Capital,"National Capital Region"
Jakarta,-6.2088,106.8456,10562088,Metropolis,"Special Capital Region"
New York City,40.7128,-74.0060,8336817,Metropolis,"Largest city in the US"

When clicking on any point marker on the map, all custom attributes (e.g. population, category, notes) will appear in the Feature Properties table, and they will be retained when downloading as GeoJSON or KML.

What Is CSV to Map?

A CSV to map converter is an essential GIS utility for field researchers, analysts, and developers to quickly visualize spreadsheet locations. By reading tabular coordinate data directly in the browser, you can verify GPS survey points, inspect customer distribution locations, and convert tabular data into geospatial standards with zero software installation.

Supported CSV Formats & Coordinate Bounds

The parser supports standard CSV conventions:

  • Delimiters: Auto-detects comma (,), semicolon (;), and tab (\t) delimiters.
  • Quoted Values: Supports commas and line breaks within quoted fields according to RFC 4180.
  • Latitude Range: Decimal values between -90.0 and 90.0 degrees.
  • Longitude Range: Decimal values between -180.0 and 180.0 degrees.
  • Encoding: UTF-8 encoded text with automatic BOM stripping.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my CSV file uploaded to a server?▼
No. Your CSV file is processed entirely in your web browser. Coordinates and data attributes are parsed locally and never sent to our servers, keeping your datasets confidential.
What coordinate formats are supported?▼
The tool supports Decimal Degrees (DD). Latitude values must be between -90 and 90, and Longitude values between -180 and 180.
How does automatic column mapping work?▼
The tool automatically detects common column header names (such as latitude, lat, y, and longitude, lon, lng, x, plus name/title columns). You can change or verify the detected columns before mapping.
How are invalid or missing coordinates handled?▼
Invalid rows (e.g. non-numeric text or out-of-range coordinates) are flagged and reported in the feature list. Valid rows are still mapped and can be exported without interruption.
Can I include custom columns like population, category, or notes?▼
Yes! You can include any number of custom columns. As long as latitude and longitude are mapped, all other columns (such as population, city, notes, revenue, etc.) are automatically preserved as feature properties and shown in the inspector.
Can I export mapped points to other formats?▼
Yes. You can export validated records to standard GeoJSON (FeatureCollection with Point geometries) or KML (with Placemarks and attribute tables) with one click.
