How to Use the KML & KMZ Viewer
Our interactive KML & KMZ Viewer allows you to instantly visualize geographic data structures on a map without needing desktop GIS software like Google Earth.
Upload a KML or KMZ File
You can upload any standard .kml or .kmz file from your computer using the file browser or by dragging and dropping the file into the upload zone. The viewer will automatically parse the data and zoom the map to fit all features.
View KML and KMZ on the Map
Once loaded, the map will display your placemarks, paths, and polygons. You can click on any feature directly on the map to inspect its properties.
Inspect Features
Click on any point, line, or polygon to see its properties, names, and descriptions.
What Is a KML File?
KML (Keyhole Markup Language) is an XML notation for expressing geographic annotation and visualization within two-dimensional maps and three-dimensional Earth browsers. KML was developed for use with Google Earth and is now an international standard of the Open Geospatial Consortium.
What Is a KMZ File?
A KMZ file is a zipped KML file. It often contains a single `doc.kml` file along with other supporting files like images and custom icons. KMZ makes it easier to share large KML files and their associated resources.
KML vs KMZ
While KML is raw XML text, KMZ is compressed. KMZ files are generally smaller and more efficient for sharing. Both contain the same geographic data.
Supported KML Features
This visualizer supports common KML structures, including:
- Geometries: Point, LineString, Polygon, and MultiGeometry.
- Features: Placemark, Folder, and Document.
- Properties: Descriptions, names, and other metadata.
