How to Validate a GeoJSON File

Our online GeoJSON Validator makes it easy to check whether your geographic data files are properly formatted according to the official specification. Simply upload your file or paste your raw code into the editor.

Upload or Paste

Drag and drop your .geojson or .json file into the drop zone, or paste your text directly into the code box.

Validation and Error Reporting

Click "Validate GeoJSON". If there are errors, the validator will provide the exact path (e.g., features[2].geometry.coordinates) and a clear explanation of what is wrong (e.g., "Latitude must be between -90 and 90").

Interactive Map Preview

If your GeoJSON is valid, the validator will automatically generate an interactive map preview showing your Points, Lines, and Polygons so you can visually verify that your coordinates are in the right place.

What the Validator Checks

  • JSON Syntax: Ensures the file is valid JSON before attempting to parse it as GeoJSON.
  • GeoJSON Structure: Verifies that all required properties like type, geometry, and features exist.
  • Coordinate Bounds: Checks that longitude is between -180 and 180, and latitude is between -90 and 90.
  • Polygon Rings: Ensures that polygon boundaries are closed (the first and last coordinates exactly match) and have at least 4 positions.

Supported GeoJSON Types

The validator supports the entire RFC 7946 GeoJSON specification, including:

  • Root Elements: FeatureCollection, Feature, or direct Geometries.
  • Geometries: Point, MultiPoint, LineString, MultiLineString, Polygon, MultiPolygon, and GeometryCollection.

Privacy

Your GeoJSON data is processed entirely locally within your web browser. We never upload, store, or analyze your coordinates, properties, or filenames on our servers, ensuring your mapping data remains completely private.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a GeoJSON validator?▼
A GeoJSON validator is a tool that checks your GeoJSON data against the official GeoJSON specification (RFC 7946) to ensure it is structurally and geometrically correct.
How do I validate a GeoJSON file?▼
You can either drag and drop a .geojson or .json file into the upload zone, or copy and paste your raw GeoJSON code directly into the text editor, then click 'Validate GeoJSON'.
Can I validate GeoJSON online?▼
Yes! This tool allows you to validate GeoJSON completely online in your web browser. There is no need to download or install any software.
What does the validator check?▼
The validator checks for proper JSON syntax, GeoJSON structure (like missing 'type' or 'geometry' fields), coordinate ranges (latitude between -90 and 90, longitude between -180 and 180), polygon ring closure, and other common structural rules.
Does the validator upload my GeoJSON?▼
No. Your GeoJSON is processed entirely locally within your web browser. We do not upload your data or coordinates to our servers.
Can it fix invalid GeoJSON?▼
Currently, the validator highlights the exact path and reason for the error so you can fix it manually. Automatic fixing is planned for a future update.
What GeoJSON types are supported?▼
We support the full GeoJSON specification: Feature, FeatureCollection, Point, MultiPoint, LineString, MultiLineString, Polygon, MultiPolygon, and GeometryCollection.
